About us

In the year 1982 with a group of local youth Mr. Madhu Basu the Founder General Secretary of Economic Rural Development Society (ERDS) established a NGO at the Village Vikahar of Tapan Block of Dakshin Dinajpur District, West Bengal. A group of highly dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers are always available for the services of the poor. They are equipped with updated knowledge and skill through regular training and orientation.

Initially ERDS confined its activities within five villages including and adjacent to Vikahar. ERDS started its various activity slowly and steadily and very soon it emerged to be a people's organization. Gradually two more villages were brought into the fold of ERDS. The population of the villages were mostly Scheduled Tribes. ERDS with its scarce resources and blessed with whole hearted support from the people under took many development initiatives. While being engaged in organizing development work at Vikahar, ERDS also extended its cooperation to the initiatives of the local people and a new initiative started in 1985 in Malda named as Thinagar Project with almost the same activities like Vikahar Project. Similarly another project was launched in 1984 at the village Boral, Sonarpur Block of South 24 Parganas District. At present ERDS has extended its activities in Kolkata and in five blocks viz, Sonarpur, Bamongola, Habibpur, Gajole and Tapan in four district of West Bengal, India.
